After Trillanes, Duterte Orders Revoke of Jose Velarde’s Pardon


Manila, Philippines | Minutes after Senator Antonio Trillanes’ amnesty was revoked, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday announced the revocation of Jose Velarde’s pardon.

Velarde, a notorious plunderer who is serving as Manila City Mayor under the disguise of Joseph “Erap” Estrada, was convicted for stealing ₱542.701 million of government money on September 12, 2007.

The verdict was in relation to the early 2001 controversial case involving jueteng money and tobacco excise taxes.

Duterte in his Tuesday speech that he will not step down as President even his term ends unless all corrupt officials are thrown into jail.

Velarde was detained before but former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted the notorious criminal a clemency based on the recommendation by the Department of Justice on October 22, 2007.

It was not clear if Velarde was already informed but considering his age, he will likely to spend the rest of his life in jail.
